Chapter 1: The Telegram

The story opens in May of 1945 as the Koski family receives a telegram from the War Department.  The details in this chapter are a very accurate summary of the events of that day as remembered by the Koski family.

1. Photo of the Gossard truck taken July 22, 1939.
2. The poem In Flanders Field is closely associated with Canada and observance of the end of World War I,  often known as Armistice Day, Rememberence Day or Veteran's Day in the U.S.
3. West Ishpeming School is closed now, but it provided an outstanding education for the original Koski family and their children. It was a small school in the center of the community, the kind of school where the teachers knew every student and their entire families. The teachers in this elementary school had a profound positive effect on their students and are fondly remembered by their former students. As Edna Mae remembers Mrs. Lindholm, later generations fondly remember great teachers like Mrs. Stolen and Mrs. Paulomaki.
