Chapter 2: God's plan
Chapter 2 follows the Koski family as they struggle to make a life for themselves in America during the Great Depression.

2. The story about John on the return from church is as told to Edna Mae by Lilly.
3. The conversation between Elizabeth and Lilly is reconstructed but is based on what Lilly later told Edna Mae about her promise to her mother to take care of the younger children. Lilly kept that promise.
