Chapter 34: I can't think of any other way
In Chapter 34, Art comes face to face with German infantry.
1. The conversation between Art and the other man is fictionalized, but is based on Art's re-telling of the story.
2. The details relating to the mattresses and Art's leg are based on his recollections.
3. The conversations between Art and the medics are fictionalized, but are based on Art's accounts.
4. The details about the cold weather, tires freezing to the ground, etc. are based on interviews with Warren Babcock.
5. Art remembered some soldiers throwing the bodies of German soldiers on the road for traction. That memory was echoed by other veterans of the 332nd Engineers. .
