Service Flag

A service flag, such as the one show on the left, indicates that members of the household are currently serving in the United States military. A blue star indicates a household member serving in the active military.  A gold star indicates a household member who was killed in action.

The flag that hung outside the door of the Alfred Koski house for much of World War II contained six blue stars, one star for each of the six Koski brothers. One of the Koski brothers was killed in action, but it happened so close to the end of the war that the blue star was never replaced with a gold star. The whereabouts of the original Koski service flag is currently unknown.
